Pasadena Language Center offers Hindi lessons for all levels: beginner, intermediate, advanced and conversation. About the Hindi Language
Hindi is the most widely spoken language of India, centered in the states of Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh in the north central of the country. Its more than 400 million speakers makes it one of the leading languages of the world. Like most of the languages of northern India, Hindi descends from Sanskrit and belongs to the Indic group of Indo-European branch. Hindi and Urdu, the official language of Pakistan and spoken by Moslems, are virtually the same language, though Hindi written in Devanagari alphabet and Urdu in the Perso-Arabic script.
Curriculum and Structure
The Hindi weekly classes are structured into three levels: beginner, intermediate, advanced. Each level is divided into four sub-levels: A, B, C, and D.
For the Beginner levels we use "Colloquial Hindi" by Routledge.
Beginner A: Script and Handwriting
Beginner B (units 1-3)
Topics: greetings and social etiquette, where are you from, buying a saree, booking a flight, at the doctor's
Grammar: personal and demonstrative pronouns, gender and number of nouns, adjectives and possessive adjectives, , simple questions and requests, word order, present tense of verbs, the verb "to be" , the verb "to have", polite commands, postpositions, separable and transferable possessions, subject-verb agreement, object-verb agreement, etc.
Beginner C (units 4-6)
Topics: hobbies, Indian films, food, making plans, past events/actions,
Grammar: the experiential (dative) subject, infinitive verbs, oblique verbal nouns, reduplication of question words, negative markers, aur as an adjective or adverb, generic "be", direct object, "to like", derived adjectives, "can", prediction, comparative/superlative, "to want", progressive, future tense, time expressions, irregular commands, the perfective form, the ne construction, complex verbs, etc.
Beginner D (units 7-10)
Topics: skills, giving advice, health, asking for directions, , at the restaurant, Indian festivals
Grammar: the internal obligative, types of capabilitatives, compound verbs, the external obligative, negative-incorporated words, the immediate future, the agentive construction, the subjunctive, present and past perfective forms, the conditional, causative verbs, present participle, purpose clauses and deletion, past participle, adverbials, passive voice, relative clauses, etc.
