Pasadena Language Center offers Turkish lessons for all levels: beginner, intermediate, advanced and conversation. Learn Turkish in a comfortable, casual environment and make it a fun, enriching experience! We serve the areas of Pasadena, South Pasadena, San Marino, Arcadia, Alhambra, San Gabriel, South Arroyo, Altadena, Monrovia, Sierra Madre, Glendale, Burbank, Eagle Rock, Los Angeles, La Cañada, Montrose, La Crescenta & Sun Valley.
About the Turkish Language
Turkish (Türkçe) is spoken as a native language by over 77 million people worldwide, making it the most commonly spoken of the Turkic languages. Its speakers are located predominantly in Turkey with smaller groups in Iraq, Greece, Cyprus, Bulgaria, the Republic of Macedonia, Kosovo, Albania and other parts of Eastern Europe. Turkish is also spoken by several million immigrants in Western Europe, particularly in Germany. The roots of the language can be traced to Central Asia, with the first known written records dating back nearly 1,300 years.
Curriculum and Structure
The Turkish weekly classes are structured into three levels: beginner, intermediate, advanced. Each level is divided into four sub-levels: A, B, C, and D.
For the Beginner levels we use "Colloquial Turkish" by Routledge.
Beginner A (lessons 1-4)
Topics: greetings and introductions, family members, on holiday, at the cafe, at the hotel, at the cake shop
Grammar and usage: the present tense of verbs, articles, vowel harmony, the past tense, adverbs of time, asking questions, yes/no questions, past tense questions, locative case, dative case, ablative case, comparison of adjectives, 'verbless' sentences, negation, possession, demonstratives, etc.
Beginner B (lessons 5-8)
Topics: expressing age, in the shop, the house, holiday plans, work
Grammar and usage: numbers, asking and answering questions, negative expressions, plurals, ordinal numbers, possession, suffixes, genitive, the genitive forms of personal pronouns, accusative, future plans and intentions, days of the week, functions of -ecek, expressing desire, colloquial pronunciation, telling the time, geniş zaman ("broad time"), exceptions, expressing permission and obligation, ways of influencing people, etc.
Beginner C (lessons 9-12)
Topics: clothes, food, health, wishes
Grammar and usage: forms and functions of the infinitives, compound nouns, country names as adjectives, the place of adjectives, subordinated clauses, relative clauses, the past tense in -miş, the past participle in -miş, if: conditional clauses, "open conditions", "closed conditions", the 'converbs' -ince ("when", "as soon as") and -ken ("while"), conversation aids, etc.
Beginner D (lessons 13-15)
Topics: expressing appreciation, construction, the weather forecast
Grammar and usage: the conjunction "and", indefinite pronouns, quantifiers, meanings and uses of olmak ('to be", "to become"), "when" in the future, the suffix -ki, expressing two simultaneous or consecutive actions, manner of actions, converbs, the causative, colloquial matters, double tenses, postpositions, verbs that require a subordinate clause, two words one meaning, etc.
